FAQs

Joining Sunny Gymz

How do I join?

You can either join in person by coming in during our staffed hours (see below) or sign up online. You'll need to accept our terms and conditions and also have a gym induction where we can show you everything you need to know about keeping safe and healthy in our gym. On your first visit we'll also take your photo and issue you with your membership card.

Can I try the gym before signing up?

Absolutely! For Whakatane and Eastern Bay residents, we offer one off free visit trial. If you're a visitor or want to pay as you go, another option is to purchase a Casual Visit or Concession Card.

Is there a minimum age to join the gym?

Yes, you must be at least 14 years old to use our facilities. To use our gym outside staffed hours you must be at least 16 years old. If you are aged between 16-18 you'll also need your parent/guardian to come in and sign our 24hr use agreement.

How soon can I start?

Today! Come in and see us at any time during our staffed hours (see FAQ below) and someone will help you get started. Before you use the gym you'll need to do a gym induction (a short tour to show you around and how everything works) to make sure we tick off the health and safety side. Start now by setting up your direct debit online, or pay at reception and let's get you underway.

Direct Debit Memberships

When does my membership start?

Your membership begins the day you sign up either online or at reception during our staffed hours. However before you can use the gym you need to complete a short gym induction with one of our team members. This only takes around 10-15min - we'll give you the health and safety run down about using our gym, take a quick photo, and issue you with your 24hr access card. After you sign up online, you'll be sent an email with a link to our online booking calendar to select your induction time.

What if I want to cancel my direct debit membership?

12-month Direct Debit - Our minimum membership term for weekly direct debit is 12 months from the sign up date. If you sign up and decide to end your gym membership before 12 months has completed, you will incur a cancellation fee which is 25% of the remaining term left on your membership or $150, whichever is the lesser.

Flexi Direct Debit - Our Flexi weekly direct debit membership is a contracted minimum term of 1 month with a 30 days notice to opt out following this minimum term.

It's really important that you read and understand our Terms & Conditions before you sign up. If you have any questions, please contact us.

When do I start paying?

Your first payment includes a joining fee and your first week of membership of $39.95 (12-month direct debit) & $45.95 (Flexi direct debit) and will be debited from your account on the next Thursday or Friday (depending on your bank). After this, your payments will be just $19.95 per week (12-month direct debit) or $25.95 (Flexi direct debit). Payments can only be taken from a current/cheque account (not a savings account or credit card).

Getting Started

How fit do I need to be before I start?

We welcome people of EVERY fitness level. If you have not exercised in a long time or have health issues, it's highly recommended you get clearance from your GP before starting any new programme.

What should I wear and bring?

Closed toe sport shoes and a towel are compulsory for gym entry. We highly recommend wearing light, breathable sports clothing and bringing a drink bottle, which you can fill up from our water coolers. If you have forgotten your towel – no worries. You can hire one at reception for $3 and also buy water or a Sunny Gymz branded reusable bottle. Too easy!

Wearing deodorant would also be much appreciated, to keep our gym smelling sweet as!

What will happen on my first visit?

We will issue your membership card (or concession card) and show you through the gym. From there you're free to begin.

Using the gym

What are your staffed hours?

Our staffed hours are

Monday -Thursday: 8.30am - 6.30pm
Friday: 8.30am - 2pm
Saturday: 8am - 11am
Sunday: Unstaffed (Members access only)

Hours subject to change on public holidays and during the festive season. Keep an eye on our Facebook page for updates.

How does 24hr access work?

In order to gain 24 hour access members are required to:

  • hold a current Sunny Gymz membership (24hr access is not available to Concession Card holders or Casual Visitors). Your membership can either be pre-paid (3, 6 or 12 months) or weekly direct debit.

  • be 16 years or older. If you are 16-18 years old we'll also need your parent/guardian to come in and co-sign our 24/7 agreement to make sure they are happy with you using the gym while staff are not present.

There is no extra charge for 24hr access. You will need to be shown how to access the gym after staffed hours by a SG team member and sign our 24/7 agreement.

I'm not a gym member, can I come in for a workout?

Sure! We welcome casual visits. Casual Visits and Concession Card Visits can only be done during our staffed hours (see above). The cost is $20 casual visits, $15 students (21yrs and under with Student ID).

Where can I go for help if I'm not sure what to do or how to use equipment?

Our team are available during our staffed hours, ready to help you anytime you should need them – whether you forgot your programme, need help using equipment, spotting or technique advice. They are there to make sure you make the most of your time. If you can't find a team member on the floor, pop to reception to request help.

Personal Training

How much does it cost for personal training?

Personal Training is additional to your gym membership. Prices range depending on the trainer, but are approximately:

  • 30 minutes $30-$40

  • 45 minutes $45-$55

  • 60 minutes $60-$75

Meet our trainers or book for a consultation here.

I'm a personal trainer/physiotherapist/rehab coach. Can I train my clients at Sunny Gymz?

External health & fitness professionals require prior approval by management to train clients at Sunny Gymz. Please get in touch with us if this is something you would like to do regularly.

Group Fitness Classes

How do I book an RPM class? (spin class)

RPM® bookings are made online via the Studio Bookings app

Register your details then you book/pay for your bike at the same time. Costs are:

  • $5 per class for gym members

  • $20 per class for casual visitors

When logged in you'll also have an option of buying a pre-purchase a pack of 5 or 10 classes.

Please note: We require 12 hours notice if you need to cancel (No refunds are available, unless the class is cancelled by Sunny Gymz. However, bookings cancelled up to 12 hours before the class will receive a class credit. Cancellations made within 12 hours of the class will not receive a credit).

We kindly ask that you turn up at least 5-10 minutes before class starts to set your bike up and be ready to ride. Bring a water bottle and a large sweat towel.

I'm just starting out. Will the classes be too hard for me?

Our classes cater to every fitness level. You choose your pace - you do not need to match the person next to you! The instructors will also offer low impact options for certain exercises to keep you safe. When you're ready, you can progress to the next option.

Do I need to book?

You only need to book for Les Mills RPM - see the FAQ below for how to book. For all other classes there is no need to book a place, just turn up 5-10 minutes beforehand with a towel and water bottle.

Concession Cards

Concession cards do not include 24hr access and must be used during staffed hours only. Concession cards can not be shared, these are to be purchased individually and must be used within 12 months of the purchase date.
